The story

Indian street food in Bellevue, done the family way

Chaat House has been family-run for over a decade, in Bellevue's Crossroads neighborhood on NE 20th. It is a vegetarian Indian restaurant in the strictest sense: no meat, no fish, no egg, ever.

Chaat is assembled to order at the counter, so it lands crisp, cold and hot in all the right places. Paranthas (paratha, if that is your spelling) are stuffed and griddled one at a time, and a thali lunch arrives as one loaded tray.

Most people come in for the chole bhature, the aloo parantha, or a samosa on the way home. The sweets case is filled from our own kitchen and sold by the pound. And when the Eastside plans a wedding or a pooja, ours is the kitchen that gets the call.

Everything fresh, everything vegetarian

There is one kitchen and it is vegetarian top to bottom: the fryers, the tawas, the gravies. Nothing to double-check, nothing to ask twice about.

Chaat is built when you order it. Paranthas come off the tawa hot. The sweets case is stocked by us, not a supplier.

Frequently asked questions

Is everything at Chaat House vegetarian?

Yes, 100%. There is no meat, no fish and no egg anywhere in the kitchen, from the fryers to the sweets case. Chaat is assembled to order at the counter and the sweets are made in-house.

Do you have Jain or no-onion-no-garlic food?

Yes, on request for many dishes: Jain food available, cooked without onion or garlic. Call ahead and tell us what you need, and we will tell you what the kitchen can do that day.

Do you sell Indian sweets by the pound?

Yes, by the piece and by the pound, from a case we fill ourselves. Festival boxes are made to pre-order, and Diwali orders go fast, so call early.

Do you cater weddings, poojas and office events?

Yes, anything from a few trays to a full-event menu, cooked by the same people who cook the restaurant food. Catering can be picked up or delivered. Call the catering line to set it up: (206) 672-2222.

Can I order directly instead of DoorDash or Uber Eats?

Yes, and it costs less. Direct pickup skips the app markups and added fees, so the same order is cheaper here. Delivery is through DoorDash and Uber Eats.

Where do you park?

There is a free shared lot right in front of the shop at 14725 NE 20th St, busiest on weekend evenings.

Does Chaat House serve breakfast?

We open at 11:30am daily, so no. For South Indian breakfast, our sister restaurant Dosa House opens in the morning at 15259 NE Bel-Red Rd, five minutes away.

What is chaat?

Chaat is Indian street food built on contrast: something crisp (a poori, a papdi, a broken samosa) under tamarind and mint chutneys, cold yogurt, onion and a handful of sev. Every bite is sweet, sour, hot and crunchy at once, which is why it is assembled the moment you order and not before.

Anything else? Call the shop at (425) 614-2222, or the catering line at (206) 672-2222.
